UCP of North Texas Group Homes
HCS Group Homes | Contacts | ICF/MR Group Homes | Ways to Help

United Cerebral Palsy of North Texas provides a caring, family style living situation for adults with disabilities in its group homes. The group homes are places for people with disabilities to live as independently as possible. UCP of North Texas currently operates four group homes in the North Texas area; two in Dallas, one in Garland, and one in Richardson. The UCP group homes are licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services and inspected at least once a year. These inspections are all inclusive and cover everything from consumer records to facility cleanliness and safety. The UCP group homes are staffed 24 hours a day. When residents are home, a minimum of 2 team members are at the home during feeding, bathing, and personal hygiene times. During sleeping hours, one team member is awake and on duty. Team members clean and maintain the house, cook meals for residents, and attend to the residents’ personal care. The homes are equipped with roll in showers and lifts to help move residents into and out of their wheelchairs and beds.

Michael’s House, located in Garland, and Bolivar House, located in Dallas, serve people who are enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCS) program. UCP’s HCS Group Homes are a community-based program for people with mental retardation and related conditions enabling the individuals with the opportunity to co-exist and participate individually or in smaller groups within the community. If you are interested in placement in a UCP HCS Group Home, please contact Andrea Ukrainzow, HCS Program Director at 214-247-4545 or

Michael’s House is home to four medically fragile residents who are unable to take care of any of their daily living needs, and are reliant on UCP team members for their care. Michael’s House residents spend their days at the UCP’s Adult Day Program, IMPACT  enjoying movies, music, and the companionship of their friends.

The four residents of Bolivar House enjoy their new home built in 2007. During the day, they attend the UCP’s Adult Day Program, IMPACT.

Thanks to the generosity of The Meadows Foundation, the Granville C. and Gladys H. Morton Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas, and private donors, UCP was able to open Bolivar House.

Ability House, located in Richardson and Walnut House, located in Dallas, serve clients enrolled in the Intermediate Care Facility for people with Mental Retardation and Related Condition (ICF/MR) program. This program is an alternative to state institutionalization, where people live in dormitories and participate in activities in large groups with less emphasis on the individual and their needs. Ability House and Walnut House are licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services

The six residents of Ability House attend UCP’s Adult Day Program, IMPACT. Ability House has been adopted by The Altrusa Club of Richardson. The Altrusa members celebrate birthdays and holidays with the residents and take them to community events.

The six residents of Walnut House spend their days at work in a sheltered workshop. They manage their home by helping plan and prepare meals and planning group activities. The National Charity League of Richardson has adopted Walnut House. They help brighten up the house with flower planting, activities and birthday celebrations.

Ways You Can Help   (Top)

  • In-kind donations benefit UCP Group Homes. They use all the products found in every family’s home, but use four times as many. Canned goods, paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, etc.), and cleaning supplies (garbage bags, laundry detergent, etc.) are all items that are purchased for the group homes. Your in-kind donation of these type items allows UCP to have more funds to spend on client services. If you are interested in making an in-kind donation, please contact Teresa Wilson at 214-247-4544 or

  • Designate a cash gift to one of our group homes – your donation benefiting our group homes helps pay the utility bills, making our group homes comforting places to live. Donate Now  to support UCP’s group homes.

  • Adopt a Group Home! – Your organization or family can adopt a UCP Group Home. By adopting a home, you ensure the residents of the home enjoy celebrations of holidays and their birthdays, and possible community outings. For more information on adopting a group home, please contact Bill Knudsen, UCP’s President and CEO at (214) 247-4501 or

  • Help us build a new group home – thousands of adults with disabilities are waiting for residential services like our group homes. They should have options other than state run facilities or nursing homes …they should have the opportunity to live in a group home environment. In 2007 we launched the 10 x 10 Campaign – a campaign to build ten new group homes for people with disabilities in ten years. If you would like to help us build a group home please contact Bill Knudsen, UCP’s President and CEO at (214) 247-4501 or
